Student Profile: Thomas Grigans

Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of the Chatham experience is the community. In such unprecedented times, I (Abigail Kneuss ‘23), have become increasingly grateful for this community and its members. In an effort to showcase just a few of these great people, I’ll be doing a series of student interviews in the coming weeks. These highlights are for students, about students, and by students. This week features Thomas Grigans ‘21.

Thomas is a Marketing and International Business major here at Chatham who is a member of the Men’s Lacrosse team, a previous RA, an executive board member of the Chatham Marketing Association, a part of the Student Athletic Advising Committee, and a game manager for the Chatham Cougars. He is graduating this semester with two internships under his belt and a full-time position in the business world ready for him post-graduation. Learn more about Thomas, his time at Chatham, and his plans for the future below!

Thomas Grigans ‘21

Pronouns: he/him

Major: Marketing & International Business

Hometown: Holt, MI

Q:  Why did you decide to come to Chatham and study marketing and international business?

A: Originally, I heard of Chatham because I was recruited by the prior head lacrosse coach as they were starting up a men’s team. I got to visit in March of my senior year of high school and sat down with Dr. DeLong, the head of the marketing major, and I dove right into the business program. By my sophomore year, I realized I had the opportunity to do an interdisciplinary program and incorporate international business into my degree and decided that it was a great opportunity considering the state of the economy today.

Q: How has COVID impacted your Senior year?

A: It’s been a bit frustrating because I’m a firm believer in the value of an on ground class as a business major, especially when it comes to professional presentations and collaborating with teams. However, being comfortable with Zoom came in handy last semester for my capstone project. I worked with fellow students all over the globe on bringing a winery in Italy into new markets. It was cool to collaborate with people with different ideals and goals. Obviously, the lacrosse season is looking different as well. We’re only playing conference teams to avoid travel. It’s going to be tough, but I’ll never get this season back, so wearing a mask under my helmet is a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

Q: Can you tell me more about your work with the Chatham Marketing Association?

A: The club is part of the American Marketing Association and is our local chapter here at Chatham. The AMA is a professional association that works with students on case competitions, branding for businesses in local communities, and pitch competitions. It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with students at other universities and compete at the national level. I’ve served as president, vice president of recruitment and professional development, and as the executive vice president. My first year, I got to go to New Orleans to compete and meet with over 3,000 students in the marketing field. I encourage anyone interested in the marketing world to get involved.

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

A: I just signed on to a job starting post-graduation for a company called Unum in their office in Royal Oak, Michigan as a sales associate. I interned with them this past summer so I’m very fortunate to be continuing forward with them as well. I also previously worked an internship in sales for Thomson Reuters which was also a great experience that gave me the opportunity to start my internship and now career at Unum.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: If you were to ask me this when things were normal, I loved going out in the city, walking around the historical areas of Pittsburgh, and attending all of the Chatham sporting events. Recently, I’ve been really careful with what I’m doing especially since I’m in a team sport. I’ve taken up cooking for my roommates and going fishing outside of the city. It’s a safe way to relax and unwind.

Q: Any advice to someone starting their time at Chatham?

A: I would encourage them to really step outside of their comfort zone. If you’re coming in as an athlete, don’t just be an athlete. Don’t just interact with your bubble. Join clubs, go to Chatham traditions, get to know your classmates and professors. I’m happy that I got so involved during my time here, I’ve really formed some great relationships with people. You’re not going to get this time back, so why not experience it the best that you can?
