Senior to Senior Series: Cole Couchman

Hello! My name is Eliza Moore, and I am a member of the Class of 2023 at Chatham University. It is often said that the busiest students on campus are our student athletes and the Interior Architecture majors… Cole Couchman is both! Some may say that this mix is impossible, but Cole shares how he managed to make it to graduation and still have fun while doing it.

Name: Cole Couchman

Major: Interior Architecture

Hometown: Columbus, Ohio

What led you to choose Chatham?

I wanted to continue my baseball career, but also find a place I could study architecture, and Chatham offered an opportunity for me to do both.

Have your plans changed at all throughout your time at Chatham?

Not really no, I came in looking to become an architect and leave with the same goal.

What inspired you to pursue a degree in Interior Architecture?

I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in the field of architecture from as early as middle school. I have always enjoyed art, specifically drawing, and I began to apply this to floor plans and perspective views and instantly knew what I wanted to do.

How long have you been playing baseball? Who was your biggest influence/inspiration?

I have been playing baseball since the tee ball days when I was 5. My biggest influence was my dad who also grew up loving baseball and introduced me to the game, and he has been my biggest supporter since then.

What is your favorite Chatham memory?

I don’t know that I have just one, but my favorite memories come from the baseball spring trips to Florida.

What does your dream job look like?

My dream job is to open my own architecture firm focusing on commercial restaurant design and become the lead architect for my dad’s business, potentially opening up to larger scale projects in the future.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I plan to move back home to Columbus where I have a job lined up at an architecture firm I interned at last summer.

Do you have any advice for new or prospective students?

There were many times in college where I began to feel overwhelmed or stressed due to workloads, but I was always able to get things done on time and with good grades. My advice to you would be to pause once in a while to reassure yourself that you’ve got this, that you’ve made it this far for a reason and that you’re going to continue to succeed. I think these affirmations may have been able to save me a bit of stress these past four years.
