Statement to the Chatham Community: Roe v Wade Decision

Dear Chatham Community,

As expected after the leak of a draft opinion earlier this year, the Supreme Court has released its official decision overruling the Roe v. Wade decision nearly 50 years after it was handed down in 1973. Today’s decision has eliminated the constitutional right to an abortion and thus moves the determination of abortion access to the state level, which gives the already important state elections coming this November, additional significance.

This milestone decision comes at a time when we are still reeling from a series of other recent and ongoing historical events, including racial and social justice reckonings, the first global pandemic in over 100 years, runaway inflation, the scourge of gun violence, and more. Throughout history, times like these have tested our nation, our community bonds, and our own individual beliefs and values.

While historic events of this enormity can make us feel powerless in the moment, I would argue that as part of a campus community, each of us holds incredible power. The power to learn more. The power to mobilize. The power to vote. The power to lead. The power to show compassion. The power to dialogue in good faith and with respect. And, the power to create the change we seek.

Since our founding over 150 years ago, Chatham has always been an institution that has sought to champion women’s rights. As we look ahead to the coming weeks and to the fall semester, we will be working with our campus community, student leaders, and organizations devoted to furthering women and gender causes (on campus and beyond), to identify how we can best support our community around this issue while honoring our historic and ongoing commitment to women, gender equity, and women’s health.

In the meantime, support is available from Chatham’s Counseling Center Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (till 1 p.m. on Friday) for scheduled appointments (virtual or in person) and walk-ins. The Counseling Center also provides support through Talk Campus, a free mental health support app where you can connect with peers across the world.  Please contact 412-365-1282 or CounselingCenter@chatham.edu to schedule an appointment.

I know that we have people in our community on both sides of this issue and recognize that there are a wide range of emotions and impact (mentally and physically) that this can have on everyone. Wherever you find yourself on this issue, and wherever the coming days take you—at home, online or organizing in the community—please take care of yourself and each other.

Sincerely,

David Finegold
President
