NEW Leadership PA Welcomes 40 Students to Chatham to Learn Leadership, Public Policy
The National Education for Women's (NEW) Leadership Pennsylvania program, hosted by the Pennsylvania Center for Women & Politics, brought 40 students from 20 different institutions to Chatham University’s campus in May for the six-day leadership and public policy institute.
Funding for the program is provided by the EQT Foundation.
Each year, dozens of students from colleges and universities across the commonwealth are selected to attend NEW Leadership Pennsylvania. It is a part of a national network of NEW Leadership programs developed by the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University.
Students at this year’s seminar participated in panels, workshops, and more, including a mock legislative hearing and a trip to the state capitol, Harrisburg.
The PCWP also welcomed former State Senator Pam Iovino as the practitioner-in-residence for the week. Iovino led panels, shared her expertise during the social action project, and mentored students throughout the week.
Diana Irey Vaughan, the former Washington County commissioner and president & CEO of City Mission, delivered a personal and motivating speech about her pathway into politics and her experiences in the public sphere.
