Chatham receives a $20,000 PA Hunger Free Grant

Chatham University was one of 30 Pennsylvania Universities to receive a PA Hunger Free Grant from the PA Department of Education and was also recently named a PA Hunger-Free Campus for campus-wide efforts.

The PA Hunger Free Grant Initiative works to build a coalition of colleges and universities focused on addressing hunger and other basic needs for their students, creating opportunities for connection among student hunger advocates, providing resources and strategies for campuses, and supporting opportunities to apply for grants releases to addressing food insecurity.

The $20,000 one-year grant (January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024) has five goals that apply to all three Chatham locations:

  1. To provide accessible and stigma-free access to shelf-stable and fresh foods for food-insecure students at all three Chatham locations.

  2. To pilot Eden Hall Eats!, the creation of ready-to-eat meals made from Eden Hall Campus Farm and other wholesome products by students at Eden Hall.

  3. Increase access to food venues like grocery stores, farmers markets, and community food pantries.

  4. Provide culturally appropriate and nutritious Break Boxes over Thanksgiving and Winter breaks.

  5. Assess the food security status of Chatham students and gather feedback regarding initiatives.

Chatham incorporates student feedback and involvement through surveys and listening sessions about the goals, topics, and implementation plans.
